On January 24, 2006, Governor Tom Vilsack launched the Iowa Great Places project by signing agreements with Iowa’s three pilot Great Places, creating work plans designed to make each — Clinton, Coon Rapids and Sioux City — a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Great Places concept was designed to bring together the resources of state government to build capacity in communities, regions, neighborhoods or districts to cultivate the unique and authentic qualities that make the places special.

Shortly after the agreements were signed, the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division agreed to partner with the Iowa Great Places project by providing advertising for the communities on the sides of its tractor trailers. Each driving two routes per week, the three Iowa Great Places trailers will travel a combined 128,500 miles per year while reaching all of Iowa's surrounding borders.

Trailers were designed by graphic artists from each of the Great Places communities. Vernon Graphics, a company based in Newton, Iowa, formatted the graphics for printing and applied the graphics to each trailer. The graphics, which are made of an adhesive 3M material, have a life expectancy of seven years. The Division plans to apply Great Places graphics to the remainder of its fleet of trailers as more Iowa Great Places are designated.
