ANKENY (June 14, 2000) - Lynn Walding, Administrator of
the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, announced that the division
will surpass $100,000,000 in liquor sales today for the first time
since the state discontinued operation of state-run liquor stores
in 1987.
Based on the current sales figures, the division is projecting net
profits of $35 million based on gross sales of $105 million for
the fiscal year ending June 30th. For comparison, total sales for
fiscal year1999 were $98 million.
It is anticipated that the division will transfer $60 million to
the General Fund and other entities, including $10.6 million to
Iowa cities and towns and $9.7 to substance abuse treatment and
prevention.
Walding explained that the increase can be attributed to expanded
tourism, supplier price increases, consumer preference for premium
products and the strength of the economy.
