What are the legal ages to serve and sell alcoholic beverages in Iowa?

Employees must be 16 years old to sell and deliver (in original unopened containers) liquor, wine and beer for off-premises consumption (grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, etc. Employees must be 18 years old to sell and dispense liquor, wine and beer for on-premises consumption (restaurants, bars, clubs, etc.).

Note: Age requirements apply to the licensee's family members as well as nonfamily employees. If there is a local ordinance governing minors in licensed establishments, the ordinance applies.

What form do I fill out for a new license?

The off-premise application is for carry out beer, liquor, and wine. The on-premise application is for on-premise consumption of beer, liquor and wine. A separate license is needed for each location.

Who may obtain a Catering privilege?

Catering privilege is not a stand-alone license. Catering privileges may be issued only to holders of annual classes B (hotel/motel) and C (restaurants, etc.) liquor licenses. Please refer to the Catering License application for further information.

Liquor license renewals no longer have to be notarized.

Can I transfer my license to another city?

Transfers of a license must be within the same local authority.

If I cancel my license will I receive a refund?

License fees are refunded in whole quarters. The quarter begins on the effective date of your license.

Are 6 and 8 month seasonal licensees mailed a renewal application?

Renewals are mailed out only for 12-month licenses. Seasonal licenses, which are 5 and 14 day, 6 and 8 month licenses, must reapply for a new license each year.
