Crave the Wave
Maverick Point is a "notoriously famous" extreme surfing location in northern California near Half Moon Bay. In central Iowa, the Maverick Grill is quickly becoming a hot spot in the developing area of Urbandale.
The laid-back west coast atmosphere overwhelms you upon entering the urban contemporary restaurant. Images of surfers and painted murals adorn the walls of the private dining rooms. The Miller Room, Half Moon Bay and the Maverick Room feature artwork exclusive to northern California. There is no doubt that the California spirit is alive and well at Maverick Grill.
A unique open theater kitchen allows patrons to become absorbed in the entire dining experience by watching as head chef Caesar Mirena prepares their meals.
Mirena noted that the menu has only slightly changed since the restaurant first opened in February 2008. According to the chef, the crusted salmon and the Italian pasta are among the two most popular entrees ordered. All of the sauces, pasta and fish are prepared to order, and seafood is brought in on a daily basis to ensure freshness. Mirena prides himself on the fact that the menu is versatile and there is something to accommodate everyone.
Owner Miller Ream is from Chariton, Iowa, and currently resides in San Mateo, California. Ream previously owned the Rusty Scupper on Grand Avenue, which boasted 15 locations across the country. The original crew that opened the Rusty Scupper was called upon to launch the Maverick Grill. Ream discovered one of his managers, James Foreman, while dining at another Des Moines restaurant.
The Maverick Grill was the first establishment in the Tuscany Village. Managers James and Kristin Foreman are pleased to be a part of the growing community as Urbandale expands to the west side of the interstate.
"We tell our staff to do their best to take care of every customer consistently from day-to-day," said James Foreman. Kristin Foreman added. "We try to foster a family feeling, which creates a more comfortable relaxed atmosphere that flows over to the customer."
To instill a feeling of family, the Foreman?s brought staff with them that had previous experience in the hospitality industry. The sublime combination of relaxed west coast atmosphere, family feel and fresh food will have you craving the Mavrick Grill after just one visit.
'Maverick' History
The Maverick Grill is based on the famous waves of Maverick Beach, home to a renowned international surf competition. The name maverick is derived from a type of wave found in Half Moon Bay. The wave was named by a group of ambitious surfers in the 60s that had a curious canine named Maverick who tried to test the waters himself. From that day forward, the location has been known as Maverick's Point.
