The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division recently kicked off a pilot project where servers and bartenders in Johnson County were able to attend Training in Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS), a training curriculum designed to assist employees at bars and restaurants in preventing alcohol sales to minors or intoxicated patrons, free of charge. The project was funded through a grant from the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau.
In addition to TIPS training, the project consisted of a limited, one-time affirmative defense offered to participating establishments and an evaluation component conducted by the Forum on Responsible Retailing. Response to the project was overwhelming, with 639 employees from 53 establishments in the Johnson County area attending the training sessions held in Iowa City from August 4th to 15th, 2003.
