The Cops in Shops program is designed so that a minor walking into
a local retailer to purchase a pack of cigarettes has to ask themselves
if the clerk behind the counter is an employee of the store
or a local cop. Beginning in the Spring of 2001, plain clothed peace
officers began working behind retail counters throughout the state
in a joint effort with the retail community to deter Iowas
kids from attempting to purchase tobacco products. Minors who attempt
to purchase tobacco, or adults that purchase tobacco for minors
are cited.
Participation in the Iowa Pledge Cops in Shops program
is limited to Iowa Pledge law enforcement partners.
